Two of our athletes travelled from Ireland to Sweden to compete in the 2024 World Master's Athletics Championships. With over 100 nations represented, it was a very well attended and competitive event series.
Rachel was up first and raced successfully in her 800m heat to qualify for the World Master's 800m final in her age category. She ran a PR of 2:20 in the heat, and less than 24 hours later, competed in the final, again donning the green singlet for Ireland. Rachel raced 2:21 in the final where she finished strong but outside of the medals.
Lea was also raced 800m track in his age category and he made it to the final of his event too. With a World Record being set in his age category in the final, Lea finished strong, but also out of medal contention.
Next up was the 10km road race which was held in Slottsskogen Park. It was an varied and extensively hilly course. Reports from many athletes confirmed this. Rachel competed in this event and burned her legs out on the course. She finished eighth in her age category in the World Master's field and was the second Irish lady home. Not bad for someone who doesn't run too many 10km races.
The final event Rachel competed in was the 8km Cross Country, again held for Slottsskogen Park, and only two days after the 10km race. This time, Rachel competed on a team with two other Irish representatives, Fiona Gettings and Karla Doran. The girls had a tough competition on their hands, with plenty of strong athletes from the numerous nations present competing. Team Ireland had great success and finished first in the F40 category. Plant Based AC is immensely proud to have one of our athletes win a gold medal for Ireland in this prestigious event.
The final competition for Plant Based AC to represent Ireland in was the Men's 1500m track event, which Lea competed in. Lea raced well in his heat and qualified for the final. Again, with a competitive field present, Lea raced hard but it wasn't to be a medal finish, this time!
Congratulations to our two athletes on representing Ireland and doing so well in their first World Master's Athletics Championship event. Keep up the good work and training.
